Europe Visa Waiver Requirements for Mexicans

Every Mexican traveler will need a travel authorization who plans on traveling to Europe by the end of 2025. The new visa waiver program designed by the EU – European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) will be mandatory for Mexican travelers.
ETIAS program aims to simplify the immigration process and thus prevent illegal immigration to the Schengen Area. The system will also facilitate travel while improving border security at the same time. ETIAS carries out multiple purposes, including the fight against criminal and terrorist activities to create a safe environment for travelers and local communities. Once approved, ETIAS will be valid for short-term trips up to 90 days each for the next three consecutive years.

How to travel from Mexico to Europe with ETIAS?

As soon as ETIAS is launched, that is, by the end of 2025, all Mexican travelers intending to visit any of the Schengen member states will have to apply for the ETIAS visa waiver.
ETIAS applications are available online and require neither physical visit to the embassies or consulates nor physical provision of any supporting documents. The system allows nationals of the eligible countries (EU visa-exempt countries) to enter and remain in the EU for up to 90 days.
However, if Mexicans need to stay in the Schengen zone for longer than 90 days, they need to apply for a Schengen Visa. Schengen visa requirements for Mexican citizens are different from the ETIAS requirements.
One of the similarities between the Schengen visa and ETIAS is the necessity for the application fee. ETIAS visa waiver for Mexico will essentially require the payment, which most likely will be disclosed until the beginning of 2025. Without paying the application fee, ETIAS will not be processed.

Which countries can Mexicans visit with ETIAS?

All Mexican travelers who have approved ETIAS can enter any of the 26 Schengen countries at any given time during their visit to Europe. They should keep in mind that some European Union countries are not part of the Schengen zone and do not participate in the ETIAS program.
ETIAS works in a much simpler way than the Schengen visa. Instead of needing a visa for a specific country and being restricted to vising that particular country only, Mexican ETIAS holders can freely travel to all member states. However, the travel authorization limits the holders to travel around the region for up to 90 days at a time.
All in all, Mexican nationals with an ETIAS visa waiver can visit 22 European Schengen zone countries and 4 EFTA non-EU states. The ETIAS visa will also allow Mexicans to visit the Canary Islands and Madeira.

Traveling to Europe with a Mexican Passport

There are only a few steps required to apply for ETIAS and get authorized for traveling in the European Union. We will be describing each of the required steps in greater detail below:

Provide Biometric Data
The biometric information required for ETIAS application includes the first and last name, date of birth and nationality, gender, and place of birth. All the data provided within the application will be checked against several security and informational databases. The applicants should ensure that they are providing legit and up-to-date information (such as indicating maiden name if married) so that the mistakes do not cause a hit in the ETIAS system.

Submit supporting documents
The only document required for ETIAS online visa for Mexican citizens is a valid passport. However, the passport should be biometric. The applicants shall provide the following information: the passport number, issue date, and expiry date. Furthermore, the document should be valid for at least three months after the date of arrival in the EU.

Complete the contact information
The contact information and addresses are crucial to receiving the ETIAS authorization for Mexican travelers. The applicants will need to fill in their current residential address in Mexico, phone number, and e-mail address. If the e-mail address is incorrect or misspelled, the applicant will not receive the ETIAS, as it is delivered through the e-mail.

Respond to the background questions
ETIAS will ask for some additional information for eligibility screening, including the educational background and employment status, and details. Even though this information does not have a huge effect on granting the authorization, it is in place to check if there is any risk that the applicant plans to remain in Europe to work. Under the ETIAS rules, working in Europe is not authorized unless a third-country national has a designated visa.

Answer to the security questions
The ETIAS application will also include several questions that aim to prevent terrorism or other criminal activities within the European Union for security reasons. The applicants may need to answer a few questions regarding their past traveling history (including the travel to war zones), criminal record, drug use, or any other travel-related violations in the past.
Once you submit the application and pay the ETIAS application fee for Mexican citizens, the system will automatically start screening the information shared by the applicant. The ETIAS checks provided data against the criminal, citizen, and informational databases. The list of the major databases used for screening ETIAS applicants includes:
• SLTD (INTERPOL)
• TDAWN (INTERPOL)
• EUROPOL
• EURODAC
• SIS
• VIS

All applications are initially processed electronically unless there is something wrong with the information provided. If the applicant has submitted incorrect data or the system detects any security risks associated with the traveler, ETIAS online application will instead be processed manually. While electronic processing takes no more than a few hours, manual processing could last for a week.
